All-new Echo (2nd Generation) with improved sound, powered by Dolby, and a new design – Heather Gray Fabric

New Echo (2nd Generation)

List Price: USD 99.99
Price: USD 99.99 (As of October 26, 2017)
Exchangeable Outer Shells:  Walnut, Oak and Silver Finish, Charcoal, Gray, and Sandstone Fabric

The Echo has become a mainstay in a lot of our homes including my own.  I purchased one of each of the Echo devices which the Echo, the Tap and Dot. The new Echo (2nd Generation) is pre-ordered and will arrive soon.  I purchased the new Echo because of its size and the new interchangeable shells. Instead of having to settle for the basic black, there are more color fabrics and finishes to choose from. I also wanted to replace my Dot with something larger, but not as large as the Echo Plus.  This new device is the right size for my needs.

The cost is economical and you don’t have to worry about breaking the bank.  Its new fabric shells and finishes are much more attractive than the original Echo’s black (or white) perforated plastic housing.

If you’re thinking about what are the differences between the old and new Echo, it is not all that much.  It still performs the same tasks and requests as the first generation device, but as some put it, the Echo has become smarter. The seven beam-forming microphones make it easier for the device to hear your voice from farther away.  A recent update from Amazon allows Alexa to now recognize different voices where you can use your voice as the Alexa password.

The Echo will recognize your voice, and when you ask  for example, “Play my favorite playlist,” it will play your playlist and not your roommate’s. The same feature also works when making phone calls. If you tell your Echo to call your Mom, it will call your mother from your contact list instead of someone who may share your device.

You guessed it, the real product Amazon is selling is Alexa. You can still make calls to other Echo devices, as well as to those people with the Alexa app, perform voice calls to your family and friends’ mobile phones and landlines and set up multi-room listening.

Although, the new medium-sized Echo is a neat device, its audio quality is still so-so.  The speakers were updated with Dolby sound which included a 2.5-inch sub-woofer and 0.6-inch tweeter. They do perform well enough for you to enjoy your music and podcasts. However, if you are an audiophile, you may want to connect high end speakers to enhance your listening experience.

With Bluetooth and the newly added auxiliary jack, you can connect the new Echo to any speaker, unlike with the first generation Echo. This works the same as it does on the smaller Echo Dot, and makes it easy to add voice control to existing stereo equipment.

When looking at the device, the most obvious visual difference between the new Echo and its predecessor is the device’s size. Where the first Echo’s size and shape resembled a can of Pringles or tennis balls, the new model is more like a can of soda.

As one reviewer describes the device, “It’s short and stout, about two-thirds as tall as the first model, but with a slightly larger diameter. That should make it a little easier to tuck into a shelf or hide away in a corner of your living room or kitchen.”

You could say it is a rather simple design because the rotating volume ring is now plus and minus buttons, like those found on the Echo Dot. They work fine, but most users usually adjust the Echo’s volume with voice commands.

The other update includes the choice of interchangeable decorative shells which are designed to make the device blend in better with your home decor.  The first model’s black (and eventually, white) plastic finish was plain and may not have blended well inside your home.  In contrast, the new model comes with a fabric cover in a variety of grays (basically, dark, medium, or light gray) that’s aesthetically appealing to the eye and Amazon is hoping that the new look will fit in better with decorating style.

Of course, you get only once choice when you purchase. However, if you want additional shells to choose from, you will have to purchase them.  I purchased a black fabric shell because I like black it melds well with anything.  The other choices include a silvery gray, walnut, or oak finish. Keep in mind that the finishes are plastic and not actual wood or metal.

Amazon has added a number of new features to Alexa, the smart assistant inside of the Echo, including control of Fire TV set top boxes and improved smart home controls. Since Alexa runs entirely in the cloud, it doesn’t matter which Amazon Echo device you own, all of them are capable of performing the same functions.  You don’t need to buy a new Echo to get the latest Alexa features on your first-generation model. The recent updates have taken care of that.

Should You Purchase The New Echo?

If you think about it, the Amazon Echo is already the best smart speaker you can buy thanks to its ability to communicate with hundreds of connected devices, as well as Amazon’s own massive online store. In all honesty, Amazon really didn’t have to do much to the Echo to make it more appealing. It just had to make it less expensive, which is exactly what Amazon did. It’s already a top seller. The  low price, improved design, and slightly upgraded audio, makes the new Echo an attractive purchase.

If you already have a first-generation Echo, I wouldn’t rush to purchase this upgrade unless you are not happy with the old design or you feel that you really  need the auxiliary jack and the ability to change out the outer shell, then this would be a good purchase for you. If not, the first generation Echo will suffice.

Although, Amazon established the smart speaker market, it now has some tough competition from Google, Microsoft, and soon, Apple.  If you don’t like the Amazon infrastructure, then you have other smart devices to choose from. Each one does something different than the other. You have to be the judge regarding your personal needs and use for one of these devices.

The Echo Plus comes in three colors Black, White and Metallic Silver. If you own the first generation Echo, you should be familiar with how it functions. The biggest difference from the Echo is the addition of an integrated Hub for simple setup for compatible smart home devices.

In regards to sound, the Echo Plus uses the same speaker and Dolby processing as the Echo, but the Echo Plus has a taller design which means a larger cavity for the speaker to work. It’s tweeter is slightly larger at .8 inch versus the Echo’s .6 inch.  The Echo Plus also keeps the volume ring around the top, whereas the Echo doesn’t have it. The Echo Plus is also capable of omni-directional 360-degree audio that should produce a crisp, clear performance no matter where you are in the room.

The Echo Plus is also going to be more suited for those who plan to really take advantage of the smart home functionality. The Echo 2 can control your Hue bulbs and so on, the Plus can act as a smart-home hub and easily set everything up by just asking it.  If you purchase the Echo Plus, a free Hue bulb comes with the Plus, to provide a jump start to setting up your smart-home. Keep in mind, the other difference between the two devices is cost.  The Echo Plus cost $50 more than the new Echo.
